In a recent post, I shared my experience of taking ADHD couples courses multiple times with my ADHD spouse. Participating in these courses has significantly improved our communication, problem-solving, and overall progress in our ADHD marriage journey. So, when Anita Robertson decided to revamp her ADHD & Us course, I knew I had to check it out.
Who is Anita Robertson, LCSW?
Anita Robertson is a seasoned psychotherapist with ADHD, based in Austin, Texas. She brings a wealth of knowledge and compassion to her work. In addition to her practice as a psychotherapist, Anita is the author of ADHD & Us and now an ADHD coach, enabling her to support ADHD couples worldwide. Her unique perspective as both a professional and someone with ADHD herself makes her approach especially relatable and effective.
What is the Course About, and What’s Different from the Previous Version?
The updated ADHD & Us course is designed as a 9-week hybrid experience, combining weekly online lessons with bi-weekly virtual group meetings. This is a companion course to her book ADHD & Us. Each week, couples review a new lesson on their own, and every two weeks, course participants join a live group meeting with Anita to delve deeper into the material, practice the exercises, and receive real-time feedback.
This extended format allows participants to learn together at their own pace, practice recommended exercises, and return to the group meetings with insights and questions. The result is a more thorough and impactful learning experience compared to the previous 4-week version, which was a little more condensed and required couples to comprehend quickly in order to formulate questions in the same session.
Why Should Other ADHD Couples Consider Taking This Course (Perhaps Again)?
From my experience, the new 9-week hybrid format of the ADHD & Us course has been incredibly valuable. It has helped deepen my bond with my ADHD spouse. Initially, my spouse was hesitant about attending the course again, believing there was no need. However, by the time we finished the first group meetings, he was thrilled that we decided to participate. He felt well-supported by the group and, for the first time, began sharing willingly and openingly during the group meetings. His positive response had a boomerang effect, significantly improving our communication. We’ve found it much easier to communicate with each other, not just in weekly check-ins but in general, because a second time around of the same content really helped deepen our understanding of Anita's book, ADHD & Us, and all the exercises we practiced throughout this 9-week course.
If you're considering whether to join or rejoin this course, here are three reasons why it’s worth your time:
Perfect or Start Your Weekly Check-In as a Couple:
The course emphasizes the importance of weekly, structured check-ins that Anita put together. It focuses on creating a positive experience for the couple. This can be a game-changer for many ADHD couples. For us, this structured check-in really helped us pave the way to better communication and develop empathy for each other. Once we became well-versed in the structured check-in, we started automatically leveraging parts of the check-in in our daily communications, which truly provided us another breakthrough in our relationship—we actually started finishing conversations more often because we unlocked a critical step—we both felt heard in our conversations!
Discounted Coaching Sessions:
Take advantage of discounted or even a free coaching session offered in exchange for feedback and testimonials. This is a unique opportunity to receive personalized support from Anita, enhancing your progress. Furthermore, if you or your partner are curious about ADHD coaching, these sessions are a great way to learn firsthand from an expert who practices both therapy and coaching.
Support Environment for Both Partners
During the group meetings, Anita encourages participants to share their experiences and tips through group discussions. These are powerful discussions because often, the discussions lead to personal and couple struggles that the group can relate to. For us, we had quite a few moments that sparked quick sidebar solution discussions between us because stories or challenges from other couples were challenges we had run into, or a shared solution was something we thought we could try out ourselves.
Conclusion:
Overall, whether you’re new to the ADHD & Us course or considering taking it again, the updated format and added benefits make it a valuable experience for couples navigating the complexities of ADHD in their marriage. One of the biggest benefits for ADHD couples in this course is establishing a weekly check-in practice with guidance from an expert. This will truly help both partners see success quickly, allowing them to start rebuilding trust and empathy for each other.
