This post is dedicated to Chris A. Ziegler Dendy, the creator of the original ADHD Iceberg poster. she was a big ADHD advocate and recently passed away. Read here from the ADHD News Stand on her contribution. RIP Chris.
Living with a partner who has ADHD has its challenges, especially when it comes to remembering all the symptoms and understanding their actions. For me, visual reminders have proven to be invaluable in helping me recall what I sometimes forget. Among various visual aids, the ADHD Iceberg poster stands out as the most effective tool for me. Created by Chris A. Ziegler Dendy, a life long ADHD advocate who recently passed away, it serves as a constant reminder that enables me to better comprehend the intricacies of ADHD and apply this understanding during interactions with my ADHD spouse.
So, why exactly do I find visual reminders so essential?
First, many symptoms of ADHD are incredibly subtle and hidden, making them challenging to recognize, especially for those new to ADHD. By having visual reminders, I can save some brain power and mental effort in identifying my partner's behaviors. The visual cues serve as a guide, making it much easier to spot specific patterns and traits associated with ADHD. It's like having a cheat sheet that simplifies the process of understanding and responding to their actions.
Second, the power of repetition cannot be underestimated. The visual reminders act as another form of repetition, reinforcing my knowledge about ADHD symptoms. Being able to glance at the visual aids helps me retain the information better and ensures that I don't forget critical details. It's like imprinting the knowledge in my mind, so it becomes second nature to recognize and address these symptoms as they occur.
Third, ADHD symptoms don't present themselves all at once. They can change based on factors such as age, the time of diagnosis, and life experiences. Having a visual representation of the symptoms allows me to track and identify the ones I've observed so far. Moreover, it enables me to anticipate what other symptoms might surface in the future. This proactive approach empowers me to self-help and prepare ahead of time. I can delve into specific topics, seek relevant training, and equip myself with the knowledge and skills needed to support my partner effectively throughout their ADHD journey.
In summary, visual reminders play a crucial role in my understanding and handling of ADHD. They simplify the process of recognizing hidden symptoms, aid in memory retention through repetition, and allow me to anticipate and prepare for potential changes in my partner's symptoms. With visual cues guiding me, I feel more confident in navigating the complexities of ADHD and providing the necessary support for my partner's well-being.
